Born in Tokyo in 1949, Junichiro Ohkuchi is a highly regarded jazz pianist known for his dignified touch and a unique musical personality developed over a long and distinguished career. Drawing inspiration from the delicate sensibilities of Bill Evans and the melodic richness of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ohkuchi has crafted a signature sound that balances agility with profound sensitivity. Throughout his career, he has led several notable ensembles, most notably his long-running piano trio featuring bassist Yasushi Yoneki and drummer Tamaya Honda. He also leads a "Percussive Trio" featuring percussionist Gen Ogimi and bassist Tetsuo Koizumi, showcasing his affinity for energetic Latin grooves. Ohkuchi has been a vital member of numerous groups, including those led by veteran drummer Fumio Watanabe, and has collaborated extensively with vocalists such as Mari Nakamoto and Yuka Ueda. His discography as a leader reflects his artistic breadth. In 2009, he released his first solo project, "Plays Solo Piano." Other significant works include "Targe" (2010), which blends hard bop feelings with masterful piano ballads; "Invisible" (2016), a trio masterpiece where melody, rhythm, and harmony interact with a sense of risky looseness; "Percussive Trio" (2020), centered on high-caliber Latin grooves; and "IKI" (2021), a duo recording with his longtime musical partner Yasushi Yoneki. He also appeared on the collaborative albums "Dois" (2013) and "Song of Flower" (2011). Ohkuchi remains an active force in the jazz scene, frequently touring across Japan and performing internationally.
