Liu Chia-en is a prominent jazz bassist, educator, and promoter based in Taichung, Taiwan. His musical journey began with a foundation in classical piano, later expanding to include folk guitar, bass, and drums during his high school years. Since 2010, he has been a consistent participant in the Taipei International Summer Jazz Academy (TISJA), where he received instruction from renowned masters such as German guitarist Joachim Schoenecker, American-European saxophonist John Ruocco, and Italian saxophonist Rosario Giuliani. His talent led him to be selected as an outstanding student in 2011 and 2012, earning him opportunities for advanced study at the Koyo Conservatory in Japan and the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance in Israel, where he learned from figures such as Mark White, Scott deOgburn, Bob Tamagni, and Tal Gamlieli. As a performer, Liu has appeared at major festivals and venues including the Taichung Jazz Festival, Houli Saxophone Festival, and the National Palace Museum Southern Branch, as well as various cultural centers and independent music festivals. In 2017, he established a dedicated base for jazz music and culture in Taichung's West District to foster the local scene. He also serves as an instructor for jazz music clubs at National Chung Hsing University and Tunghai University, and has taught jazz at the Taichung Second Senior High School music program. In addition to leading his own trio, he is the bassist for The Nick Javier Group.
