About

Born in 1953 in Den Haag, The Netherlands, Luc Houtkamp is a distinguished composer, saxophonist (alto and tenor), and electronic music artist. His career is defined by a central musical goal: to bridge the gap between jazz improvisation and formal composition, creating a continuum where the distinction between the two dissolves. Houtkamp is an autodidact who furthered his studies at the Vrije Academie and the Institute of Sonology in Den Haag, developing a highly personal sound that integrates computers and live electronics with diverse forms of musical notation. Throughout his extensive career, Houtkamp has led numerous ensembles and collaborated with prominent figures in the international jazz and avant-garde scenes, including Han Bennink, Ernst Reijseger, Steve Beresford, and Martin Blume. In 2001, he established the POW Ensemble, a flexible unit of musicians with backgrounds in jazz, rock, and contemporary music, which became the primary vehicle for his experimental compositions. His solo work, particularly the 1991 recording 'The Songlines', is celebrated for its mastery of extended techniques such as circular breathing and overblowing, earning him a reputation as a 'sonic scientist' who explores the minute textures and dynamics of sound. Since 2014, Houtkamp has lived and worked in Malta, where he remains an active force in the contemporary music scene, focusing increasingly on composition for various ensembles and soloists worldwide.
