Led by Michael Pignéguy, The Awakenings Ensemble blends Middle Eastern traditions with modern jazz. This multinational group creates a cinematic journey from Istanbul to Pakistan, weaving ancient ney and oud melodies into contemporary grooves.
Led by Australian drummer and composer Michael Pignéguy, The Awakenings Ensemble presents "Tales from the Orient," a profound musical journey spanning from the western shores of Istanbul through Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and Persia to Pakistan. This internationally acclaimed group creates a sonic dialogue between ancient Middle Eastern traditions and modern jazz expression, weaving together traditional instruments like the ney flute and oud with contemporary arrangements. The ensemble features a multinational lineup, including world-class musicians from Australia, Iran, and Lebanon, notably featuring the Persian vocals and ney of Esfandiar Shahmir. Their performances have graced prestigious global stages, including Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club in New York, The Esplanade in Singapore, and various venues across the Middle East and Australia. Critics have described their music as a "magic carpet ride" and a "compelling mix of world music, jazz, and grooves," with The West Australian noting its cinematic quality redolent of exotic voyages. Supported by the Western Australian Government, the project explores the healing power of cultural diversity and the deep emotional connections achieved through musical fusion.
