The Eurasian Quartet draws its artistic identity from the historic 1958 State Department tour of Europe, India, and the Middle East conducted by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. This seminal journey inspired the 1958 album 'Jazz Impressions of Eurasia', featuring original compositions by Dave Brubeck that sought to capture the folk music elements of the locales he visited within a jazz idiom. The quartet’s repertoire includes 'Nomad', characterized by Joe Morello’s hand-drumming and Paul Desmond’s plaintive melody; 'The Golden Horn', inspired by Turkey; and 'Brandenburg Gate', which employs a Bach-influenced fugal style. Other core works include 'Thank You (Dziekuje)', written as a tribute to Chopin for Polish audiences; 'Marble Arches', which evokes the atmosphere of London; and 'Calcutta Blues', an Indian raga-inspired piece that utilizes a single-note drone. The original personnel featured Dave Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Joe Morello on drums, and Joe Benjamin on bass (who replaced Eugene Wright for the summer of 1958). This exploration of cross-cultural musical elements served as a precursor to the groundbreaking 'Time Out' album. The legacy of this project continues to be celebrated by groups like the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, who released the album 'Timeline' to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the original tour.
