Taiwan-born guitarist and composer Fu Ping Ryu bridges classical precision with jazz improvisation through the 'Third Stream' philosophy. An award-winning artist based in Vienna, he blends diverse global influences into a sophisticated, modern compositional voice.
Fu Ping Ryu is a versatile guitarist and composer whose work bridges the worlds of classical and jazz music, embodying the "Third Stream" philosophy defined by Gunther Schuller. Born in Taiwan, Ryu’s musical journey began with the piano at age six before his transition to guitar in high school. His expansive interests include flamenco, choro, Irish, and ethnic music. Holding degrees from Taiwan and the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, he furthered his studies in Austria under Prof. Agostino di Giorgio and is currently pursuing a master’s in jazz composition at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK) under Andy Middleton. A winner of the 2019 Concours International Roland Dyens and the 2021 Brussels International Composition Competition, Ryu has performed at the Paris and Brussels International Guitar Festivals. His collaborations include Lukas Gabric, Klemens Marktl, and Rob Bargard. Whether leading a trio or performing solo, Ryu blends traditional jazz vocabulary with modern compositional ideas and classical precision. He is also fluent in English, French, and Japanese.
