An RCM graduate and prolific film sound editor, Matthew Chan blends jazz improvisation with sophisticated production. Under the moniker Bay Blue, he crafts intricate arrangements where big band and string quartet influences meet the thrill of contemporary jazz.
Matthew Chan is a multifaceted pianist, music producer, and sound editor. A graduate of the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London, he is currently based in Hong Kong. In the film and television industry, Chan is a highly prolific figure with over 230 credits, notably serving as a re-recording mixer and music editor for major productions such as the Halo TV series (2022–2024), The Iron Claw (2023), BlackBerry (2023), and Infinity Pool. His extensive background in sound also includes work on projects like Antiviral and The Stone Angel. Under the monikers Matt Chang and Bay Blue, he has established a significant presence in the underground hip-hop scene through the Anticon label. His 2012 debut album, Bay Blue, was acclaimed for its sophisticated blend of big band, string quartet, and jazz duo influences, creating a contemporary sound that mirrors the improvisational thrill of jazz. Chan’s production style is characterized by meticulous sample selection and complex arrangements that treat instruments as vocalizations. Beyond his professional studio work, he maintains a creative presence on YouTube and Instagram (@itsmatthewchan), where he shares piano performances, skits, and original multimedia content.
