Michael Wang is an acclaimed trombonist and composer based in Taipei. A Berklee graduate and Mingus Big Band alumnus, he blends technical mastery with deep jazz tradition, as heard on his albums 'Bone of the Wang' and 'My Influences'.
Michael Wang is a trombonist, composer, and arranger who has emerged as a significant talent in the contemporary jazz scene. Originally from Sacramento, California, Wang began his trombone studies at age eleven. He attended the Berklee College of Music as a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship, where he studied with masters such as Phil Wilson, Marshall Gilkes, and George Garzone, and was a member of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute under the direction of Danilo Pérez from 2013 to 2016. After moving to New York City in 2017, he became a regular performer with prestigious ensembles including the Mingus Big Band, Frank Lacy's Smalls Sextet, Arturo O'Farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and the Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra. Wang is the winner of the American Trombone Workshop’s Division 1 solo competition and was a finalist in the International Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana and JJ Johnson Competitions. His debut album, "Bone of the Wang Vol. 1," was released in 2020 on the NextLevel label, featuring his original compositions and arrangements. Currently based in Taipei, Taiwan, he continues to lead his own groups and recently released the album "My Influences."
