Trombonist, composer, and arranger Michael Wang is a rising force in the international jazz scene. Born in Taiwan and raised in Sacramento, California, Wang began his musical journey at age eleven. A recipient of the Presidential Scholarship, he attended Berklee College of Music (2012-2017), studying with masters like Phil Wilson and Marshall Gilkes, and was a member of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute under Danilo Perez. His accolades include winning the 2015 American Trombone Workshop solo competition and being a finalist in the ITA’s Carl Fontana and JJ Johnson competitions. After moving to New York City in 2017, Wang performed with prestigious ensembles such as the Mingus Big Band, Frank Lacy’s Smalls Sextet, and Arturo O'Farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. In 2020, he released his debut album, "Bone of the Wang Vol. 1," on the Outside in Music "Nextlevel" label. Inspired by legends like Roy Hargrove and Johnny O'Neal, Wang returned to Taiwan during the pandemic, where he now leads a quartet dedicated to promoting the traditional New York Bebop language through original works and jazz standards, fostering deeper connections within the local jazz community.
