Jane, known as Piano Jane, is a retired mathematics professor turned pianist and educator. Through her educational projects and Spotify presence, she shares the joy of music, emphasizing self-learning as a vital spark of life.
Jane (also known as 蔡慕珍) is a pianist and educator with a background as a retired mathematics teacher from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Although she began classical piano lessons at the age of 12 and studied for only five years, she has dedicated herself to lifelong self-learning. In April 2009, she launched a volunteer project originally titled "Monkey See Monkey Do: Free Piano Lessons," which provides instructional resources for learners of all ages worldwide. Her teaching philosophy centers on the proverb, "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. But if you give him a fishing rod, you feed him for a lifetime," emphasizing the importance of teaching people how to teach themselves. Working alongside her husband, Michael Grossman—a co-creator of non-Newtonian calculus—Jane produces tutorials for both classical and popular music, catering to those who play by ear and those who read sheet music. In 2011, she expanded her educational outreach to include mathematics tutorials to provide accurate academic resources online. As a recording artist, she performs under the name "Piano Jane" on Spotify, where she maintains a significant listener base of over 48,000 monthly listeners. Her work reflects her belief that the joy of music is a vital spark of life.
