Hong Kong-born pianist and composer Bowen Li blends Nordic-inspired restraint with mature lyricism. Active in London and Hong Kong, he is a rising voice in contemporary jazz, known for his poetic soundscapes and sophisticated trio arrangements.
Bowen Li (Li Tsz-wo) is a Hong Kong-born jazz pianist, composer, and arranger currently active in both Hong Kong and London. A graduate of the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Li has emerged as a significant voice among the new generation of jazz talent in Hong Kong. He was featured as one of the four leaders in the "Our Jazz Pianists" showcase, a landmark project and recording released by Jazz World Records in 2022. As a bandleader, he fronts the Bowen Li Piano Trio, featuring bassist Lui Ngao Yuen and drummer Dean Li. His musical style is often characterized by a "Nordic vein," featuring restrained, autumnal, and hymnal soundscapes reminiscent of Tord Gustavsen. His compositions, such as "A Simple Word Between You and Me" and "Eagles Fable," display a mature, lilting lyricism. Li’s approach to the piano also draws inspiration from Keith Jarrett’s Standards Trio, particularly evident in his arrangements of standards like "God Bless This Child." In addition to his work as a leader, Li has contributed as a sideperson on recordings such as Dave Wilson’s "When Even Goes East" and collaborated with artists like Ricardo Bacelar. He has performed at various high-profile platforms, including the Jazz World Live Series at Youth Square and the Freespace Jazz Festival, continuing to bridge the musical landscapes of the East and West.
