Patrick Lui is an award-winning jazz pianist, composer, and producer. A Berklee graduate and Marvin Hamlisch International Music Award winner, he leads his own jazz orchestra and bridges jazz, pop, and classical music through acclaimed international performances.
Patrick Lui is an award-winning pianist, composer, arranger, and producer. Since graduating from Berklee College of Music, he has established himself as a prominent figure in the international jazz scene, winning the Marvin Hamlisch International Music Award for Jazz Composition, the Taichung Jazz Festival Piano Competition, and reaching the semi-finals of the Bucharest International Jazz Competition. His jazz orchestra piece "Mirror Dance" holds the distinction of being the first jazz composition nominated for Best Serious Composition at the CASH Golden Sail Music Awards. Beyond jazz, his work as a co-producer with the pop group RubberBand has earned multiple prestigious accolades, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year from Commercial Radio Hong Kong, as well as the Best Song award at the CASH Golden Sail Music Awards. As an internationally active performer, Lui has showcased his original works alongside acclaimed musicians such as Alex Sipiagin and Will Vinson, and has performed with the Kyoto Composers Jazz Orchestra and Taipei Jazz Orchestra. His festival appearances span the globe, including the JENerations Jazz Festival (USA), EUROPAfest, Takatsuki Jazz Street Festival, Kanazawa Street Jazz Festival, Taichung Jazz Festival, Clockenflap, Freespace Jazz Festival, and the Hong Kong Jazz Marathon. In 2024, he was invited by the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers (ISJAC) to present a big band arrangement in Nashville and performed his rearrangements of Hong Kong film music at the Yokohama International Performing Arts Meeting (YPAM). His own jazz orchestra has headlined the Freespace Jazz Festival for six consecutive years and was invited by the Jazz Education Network in the US to perform at their annual conference. Lui is also an accomplished classical pianist, appearing as a soloist with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong and collaborating with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra as an arranger and pianist. His versatility extends to film scoring, with contributions to feature films including "The Bounty," "This Is Not What I Expected," and "Chasing The Dragon." To further his artistic breadth, he completed a Master’s degree with distinction at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under a full scholarship from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. His debut big band album, "Sonder," was recorded in New York City at Systems Two Recording Studio with top-tier NYC musicians and distributed by Sony Music. Looking ahead, he will serve as the music director and composer for the Hong Kong Dance Company’s 2025 production "The Martial Artistry," commemorating the 85th anniversary of Bruce Lee’s birth.
