Helsinki-based drummer Teemu Mustonen is a versatile force in Finnish jazz. From the experimental soundscapes of murmur trio to free jazz with Tulikuu, he masterfully bridges electronic practices and traditional acoustic improvised music.
Teemu Mustonen is a Helsinki-based drummer active in the Finnish jazz and improvised music scene. He is a key member of several experimental and acoustic ensembles. In the murmur trio, alongside Libero Mureddu, Mustonen explores the intersection of electronic practices and the traditional jazz piano trio, navigating the friction between acoustic and electronic soundscapes in a real-time "laboratory of sounds." Since 2013, he has played drums for Treangular, a Helsinki-based acoustic jazz group. He is also part of Tulikuu, a quartet focused on free jazz and improvised music featuring Jukka Kääriäinen, Libero Mureddu, and Kenneth Jimenez. Mustonen's collaborative work includes the album Jälkipyörteitä with acclaimed musicians Mikko Innanen, Raoul Björkenheim, and Juhani Aaltonen. His versatility extends to chamber music settings, having performed at the Chamberhall of EAMT with musicians such as Eemeli Solehmainen and Heljä Viirakivi.
