Known as the "Godfather of Jazz in Hong Kong," pianist Ted Lo was the first Chinese Berklee graduate. Having collaborated with legends like Herbie Hancock, he remains a pivotal figure bridging international jazz and the Cantopop industry.
The Ted Lo Trio is led by the widely acclaimed 'godfather of jazz' in Hong Kong, Ted Lo. Born in 1950 and educated at St. Paul's Co-educational College, Lo became the first Hong Kong musician to graduate from the Berklee College of Music in the 1970s. After establishing himself in the United States, he spent the 1980s recording and performing with jazz legends in New York, including Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette, and Astrud Gilberto. In 1990, he toured extensively across the U.S. with jazz tap dancer Gregory Hines. Lo's debut album as a leader, 'Asian American Trio,' was recorded in New York in 1992, featuring the renowned Rufus Reid on bass and Akira Tana on drums. Upon returning to Hong Kong in the mid-1990s, he performed a homecoming concert for the Hong Kong Arts Festival in 1995 with Sandy Lam. Since relocating permanently to Hong Kong in late 1996, Lo has maintained a prolific career as a pianist, arranger, and producer, bridging the worlds of jazz and Cantopop. He has collaborated with artists such as Justin Lo and Gin Lee, and has arranged jazz for full ensembles like the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. In 2021, he was recognized as one of the 'Most Influential' figures in Hong Kong by Tatler Asia.
