Led by legendary drummer Steve Smith, Vital Information is a premier jazz fusion group spanning four decades. Their current trio explores bebop, funk, and global rhythms, reimagining Smith’s iconic career with adventurous, high-level improvisation.
Vital Information is a long-standing American jazz fusion group led by the world-renowned drummer Steve Smith. The band's origins date back to 1971, when Smith met bassist Tim Landers and saxophonist Dave Wilczewski in a Boston-area college band. After Smith's tenure with the rock band Journey, he signed with Columbia Records and released the group's debut album, "Vital Information," in 1983. Over the decades, the ensemble has evolved through various iterations, featuring legendary musicians such as Tom Coster, Frank Gambale, Mike Stern, and Baron Browne. Throughout its history, the group has explored a wide range of styles, from the high-energy fusion of their early years to the "Global Beat" direction of the late 1980s, which integrated hand percussion and steel drums. In the 2000s, Smith introduced South Indian Carnatic rhythms and konnakol (vocal percussion) into the band's repertoire, notably on the album "Vitalization" (2007). In 2023, the band celebrated its 40th anniversary with the double CD "Time Flies." The current powerhouse trio lineup features Smith alongside keyboardist Manuel Valera, a Guggenheim Fellow and Grammy-nominated artist, and electric bassist Janek Gwizdala, one of the most in-demand players in modern jazz. Their 2025 album, "New Perspective," re-envisions material from Smith's career—including jazz-inflected arrangements of Journey classics like "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Open Arms"—blending technical virtuosity with a deep sense of swing and groove.
