Sapporo-born drummer Shu Akimoto is known for his versatile style, spanning metal to ambient jazz. A collaborator with Naruyoshi Kikuchi, his leader album Difference/Location and work with bzn trio highlight his ability to find infinite rhythms within atmospheric soundscapes.
Born in Sapporo, Japan, Shu Akimoto is a highly acclaimed jazz drummer who graduated as the valedictorian of the Jazz Department at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in 2014. His diverse career spans genres, from performing at the world-renowned Wacken Open Air metal festival in 2013 as a member of 'Mysterious Priestess' to appearing at Montreux Jazz Festival Japan in 2017 with Naruyoshi Kikuchi and Axel Tosca. In 2020, Akimoto spent time in Reykjavik, Iceland, seeking creative inspiration. That same year, he released his leader album 'Difference/Location' through Uplift Jazz Record, which earned high praise from Naruyoshi Kikuchi for his unique ability to integrate ambient sensibilities into rhythmic structures. Currently, he is a member of the 'bzn trio' alongside bassist Ryo Miyachi and pianist Misaki Umei.
