Kikanju Baku is an avant-garde drummer and experimental artist recognized for his rigorous approach to improvisation and high-level technical coordination. Often performing under the aliases "Cursed One" and "K-Slop," Baku has become a prominent figure in the experimental music scenes of South Korea and Taiwan. His discography is highlighted by the notable collaboration "Conversations II" with acclaimed pianist Craig Taborn on Wide Hive Records. Baku's work spans a wide range of avant-garde styles, including a double-session cassette release with Taiwanese guitarist Ying-Da Chen titled "Creative Courage Trouncing Career Cowardice" and a split tape with industrial pioneer Dan Burke of Illusion of Safety. He is a frequent collaborator with circular-breathing master Kang Tae Hwan, trumpeter Peter Evans, and various improvisers such as Sunjae Lee, Doyoung Kim, and Yen-Ting Lo. Through his platform "Ethnicity Against the Error," Baku releases projects that blend free jazz, noise, and electronic elements, often described as "arcane-ethno-jazz-nomadism." His artistry is defined by an indefatigable energy and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of the drum kit as a solo and ensemble instrument.
