Hong Kong-based pianist and composer Ricky Wong is a versatile artist mentored by Ted Lo and Chihiro Yamanaka. A co-founder of the band maRK, he is celebrated for his sophisticated arrangements, improvisational flair, and dedication to music education.
Ricky Wong is a Hong Kong-based pianist, keyboardist, arranger, and self-taught composer. His musical journey began at age seven, eventually leading him to study under renowned musicians Ted Lo, Tony Carpio, and Universal Classics Jazz recording artist Chihiro Yamanaka. Since becoming active in 2011, Wong has established himself as a versatile performer across various genres and venues. He has collaborated with a wide array of artists and groups, including Joey Ou, Lee Lung Kei, Angela Pang, Jun Kung, Siu Fei, Endy Chow, Jason Chan, Bianca Wu, Jolie Chan, Phil Lam, Mag Lam, Dear Jane, Gin Lee, Shandy Gan, Jeffro Chan, Shiga Lin, Kit@Chochukmo, Stranded Whale, and Matzka. In 2011, he joined the Hong Kong Youth Jazz Orchestra and participated in the "Sing For All" concert. In December 2012, he co-founded the band "maRK" with Marcus Ho, Anna Fan, and Kenny KC Lin. Their debut EP, "Jump Start," released in early 2013, featured Wong’s original compositions. The band has since performed at major festivals, including the Beijing Jazz Music Week, Beishan Jazz Festival, Hong Kong International Jazz Festival, and International Jazz Day concerts. He is also a member of the band "MARY" alongside Mag Lam, Adson Fung, and Johann Choy. Beyond performance, Wong is an accomplished composer and arranger, winning the Gold award for Best Original Music at the Hong Kong Student’s Short Film Competition. His work spans piano accompaniment, improvisation, songwriting, and movie soundtracks. In 2022, he participated in the "Jazz Composers' Lab Vol.2" organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, collaborating with guitarist Alan Kwan on projects like "A First Look into Arrangement" and "An Improvised Dialogue Between Jazz and Classical Music." As an educator, Wong shares his expertise through his Patreon platform, "A Practical Approach to Piano Playing." He focuses on helping students overcome unique struggles in music theory, tone, harmony, rhythm, and space through a collection of custom exercises and a teaching journal, aiming to help musicians refine their style and break through technical bottlenecks.
