New York-based pianist Shinya Lin blends contemporary classical, jazz, and electronics. Influenced by John Cage, his avant-garde approach earned a four-star DownBeat review for 'Motions'. He is also a co-founder of the Chaospace arts community.
Shinya Lin is a New York-based contemporary music performer, composer, and improviser specializing in piano, prepared piano, and electronics. Drawing strong influences from figures such as John Cage and Cecil Taylor, Lin explores soundscapes triggered by life and nature, emphasizing the presence of life and gestures in his music. He is a co-founder of Chaospace, an emerging community dedicated to the curation of Asian artists in New York City. Lin's musical style encompasses an array of genres, including European classical, contemporary classical, jazz, and electroacoustic music. He holds a Master of Music degree from The New School’s Performer-Composer program and completed his undergraduate studies at Berklee College of Music, where he became deeply immersed in improvised music. A notable highlight of his career is his collaboration with renowned drummer Francisco Mela on the album “Motions,” which received a four-star review in DownBeat magazine. His extensive body of work includes projects and albums such as 'skandha', 'MA', 'Music of I Ching', 'Nightwalker', and 'Hyakki Yagyoo'. Lin has performed at prestigious venues including Dizzy’s Club, Roulette Intermedium, The Jazz Gallery, MoMA PS1, Birdland, and Klavierhaus, and has appeared as a soloist performing classical piano concertos with The Florida Orchestra at Mahaffey Theater and Ruth Eckerd Hall. He currently serves as a piano faculty member at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music (BKCM).
