Tonight, where's the jazz?

Shinya Lin Quartet
The boundaries of jazz are vast, ranging from the structured elegance of big bands to the experimental depths of Free Jazz. New York-based pianist and composer Shinya Lin invites you to explore the avant-garde side of the genre with a performance centered on "Life Improvisation." This quartet concert reimagines everyday sounds—the roar of the subway, street corner conversations, the clatter of kitchenware—as integral musical elements. By blending prepared piano, electronic textures, and experimental improvisation, Lin seeks new possibilities between tradition and the cutting edge. Shinya Lin is a prominent pianist, composer, and educator currently on faculty at The New School and co-founder of the non-profit Chaospace. His international career includes a residency at the Museum of Chinese in America and collaborations with jazz luminaries such as William Parker, Billy Martin, and Ingrid Laubrock. He has performed at prestigious venues including Konzerthaus Berlin, The Jazz Gallery, and Birdland.
