Shuji Watanabe is a Japanese bassist and composer who honed his craft at Berklee and Manhattan School of Music under James Genus. After establishing himself in New York, he now brings his refined international artistry to Japan's jazz scene.
Shuji Watanabe is a distinguished Japanese jazz double bassist and composer whose musical narrative bridges the vibrant scenes of Japan and the United States. His foundation was laid at Takatsuki Junior and Senior High School, followed by rigorous development within the Osaka City University Jazz Club. Seeking to expand his artistic horizons, Watanabe moved to the U.S. to attend the Berklee College of Music, where he was selected for the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute. In 2019, he showcased his creative voice in a senior recital featuring original compositions and arrangements. He further honed his craft at the Manhattan School of Music, studying under the legendary James Genus and earning his Master of Music degree in 2022. After establishing his presence in the New York jazz circuit, Watanabe has returned to Japan, where he continues to contribute his refined artistry to the professional music scene.
