Led by Michael Pignéguy, this acclaimed ensemble blends Middle Eastern traditions with modern jazz. Featuring multinational talent, their cinematic 'Tales from the Orient' offers a profound, healing journey across ancient cultures and global stages.
Tales from the Orient is a flagship project by The Awakenings Ensemble, an internationally acclaimed group led by Australian drummer and composer Michael Pignéguy. The ensemble has established itself as a leader in cross-cultural musical collaborations, weaving a rich tapestry of sound that blends Turkish, Middle Eastern, and Persian traditions with modern jazz influences. Their music is described as a wondrous musical sojourn, taking audiences on a journey from the western shore of Istanbul through Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and Persia. Led by Pignéguy’s evocative percussion and compositions, the ensemble features a multinational line-up including core members Esfandiar Shamir (vocals, ney), Michael Edelby, and Steve Richter, alongside various guest artists. Their repertoire includes evocative pieces such as "Heart of The Bosphorus," which utilizes Maksum rhythms and the Hijaz maqam to evoke the meeting of land and sea, and "Black Iris," which explores the diverse landscapes of Jordan through the Wahda rhythm. Other notable compositions include "Dark Days," a melancholy reflection on the Syrian civil war featuring the ney flute, and "Tatar Tanz," a high-energy celebration of Tatar culture. The group's work has received significant critical acclaim globally. Wynton Marsalis’s Managing Artistic Director Jason Olaine praised their "compelling mix of world music, jazz, grooves, and memorable melodies," while The West Australian described their sound as "redolent of exotic voyages and movie scores." Their recordings, including the double album 'Duality,' showcase Pignéguy’s brilliance at the drum kit and his ability to create connections between styles and cultures. Beyond the ensemble, Pignéguy also leads projects like Zarapito and the Soul Jazz Experience, consistently pushing the boundaries of contemporary jazz fusion while remaining deeply musical and accessible. Their performances are noted for creating a space for cultural dialogue, healing, and spiritual connection through the universal language of music.
