Known as the "Godfather of Jazz in Hong Kong," Ted Lo was the first Chinese Berklee graduate. After collaborating with legends like Herbie Hancock, he returned home to become a pivotal pianist and arranger across both jazz and Cantopop.
Ted Lo is a legendary Hong Kong-born jazz pianist, composer, and arranger, widely regarded as the "Godfather of Jazz in Hong Kong." His musical journey began at age six, influenced by a family of musicians and early exposure to swing and big band. Though he started on drums and pop, a discovery of Sergio Mendes at age 13 shifted his focus to jazz. Lo made history as the first Chinese graduate of the Berklee College of Music in 1975. During his decades in the United States, he established himself in the New York and Boston jazz scenes, collaborating with icons such as Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, Ron Carter, and Astrud Gilberto. A career highlight includes recording for Airto Moreira's album Identity, produced by his idol Herbie Hancock. Lo has performed at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide, including the Blue Note, Hollywood Bowl, and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Since returning to Hong Kong in 1996, he has become a pivotal figure in both the local jazz community and the Cantopop industry, working as a producer and arranger for stars like Eason Chan, Jacky Cheung, and Sandy Lam. Beyond the piano, Lo is also an accomplished drummer, recently showcasing both talents in his "Words & Beats" concert series and solo album "Words."
