Formed in 1977, the Polise Band masterfully blended rock, reggae, and jazz. Comprising Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland, the trio leveraged their deep jazz roots to create genre-defying hits, selling over 75 million records and earning six Grammys.
the Polise Band is a globally renowned group formed in London in 1977, recognized for a sophisticated musical identity that blends rock, punk, reggae, and jazz. The core line-up features Sting (Gordon Sumner) on lead vocals and bass, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stewart Copeland on drums and percussion. The group's origins trace back to 1976 when Copeland, then a member of the progressive rock band Curved Air, met Sting while he was performing with the jazz-rock fusion band Last Exit. They were later joined by Summers, a veteran guitarist with a deep background in jazz and blues who had previously played with The Animals and Soft Machine. the Polise Band's discography is marked by a series of critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums. Their debut, "Outlandos d'Amour" (1978), introduced their unique sound with singles like "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You." This was followed by four consecutive number-one albums in the UK: "Reggatta de Blanc" (1979), "Zenyatta Mondatta" (1980), "Ghost in the Machine" (1981), and "Synchronicity" (1983). Their hits include "Message in a Bottle," "Walking on the Moon," "Don't Stand So Close to Me," and the global chart-topper "Every Breath You Take." Beyond their rock success, the members have maintained extensive connections to the jazz world. Andy Summers, influenced in his youth by Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, and Miles Davis, has released several jazz-focused solo projects, including tributes to Thelonious Monk ("Green Chimneys") and Charles Mingus ("Peggy's Blue Skylight"). Sting and Summers also collaborated with German experimental composer Eberhard Schoener on projects mixing rock, electronica, and jazz. The band disbanded in 1984 at the height of their fame but reunited for a record-breaking world tour in 2007-2008. With over 75 million records sold and six Grammy Awards, the Polise Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
