Zalila Lee, or Zal as she is known to her friends, is a multifaceted Malaysian singer-songwriter and session musician based in Petaling Jaya. Recognized for her rhythmically-driven approach and contemplative outlook on music and life, her sound predominantly blends elements of Blues and Alternative music, with a lyrical style deeply influenced by Folk. Her compositions often lean towards the darker side of the emotional spectrum, exploring themes of power structures, hierarchies, and spirituality. Lee began her musical journey at age 13 on the guitar and started performing professionally during her college years, an era when she first turned to songwriting as a means of emotional release. Aside from her solo work, Lee is a dedicated full-time professional in the music industry. She performs as a session drummer and percussionist for various local artists and has extensive experience as a lyricist, music producer, vocal recording supervisor, and stage manager. Together with collaborator Melina William of Tempered Mental, she produces local indie artists under the production moniker Angie Farr. Her discography includes the 2014 EP 'Shadows', featuring tracks such as 'Letter to Time', 'Paper Skin', 'Cloudy Day Jam' (featuring David Knight), and 'Far Away' (featuring Mia Palencia). She also appeared as a singer in the 2006 film 'Lelaki komunis terakhir'. Continuously exploring new musical avenues, Lee remains a vital force in the Malaysian music scene, frequently creating exclusive material for her live performances.
