Hong Kong-based saxophonist Bernard Carpio, son of jazz legend Tony Carpio, blends deep musical heritage with energetic performance. As part of the Carpio Brothers, he prioritizes emotional connection and intuitive soloing, creating a vibrant, soulful jazz experience.
Bernard Carpio is a Hong Kong-based saxophonist, flautist, and musical director with a deep-rooted legacy in the region's jazz scene. The son of renowned big band leader Tony Carpio and the grandson of a professional musician, Bernard was immersed in music from infancy. His performance career began precociously; at the age of one and a half, he was already appearing with his father's big band using a toy saxophone. Growing up in the big band environment, he often accompanied his parents to gigs, witnessing his mother perform as a vocalist while his father conducted. Today, he performs alongside his brother, pianist Chris Carpio, as the Carpio Brothers, a collaboration celebrated for bringing creative and energetic jazz to Hong Kong. Bernard's philosophy on performance centers on the emotional exchange between the musician and the audience, prioritizing energy and vibe over technicality. He describes his most profound soloing experiences as intuitive and "out-of-body," where he connects directly with his instrument. Professionally, he serves as a Musical Director and Performing Artist at Carpio Music and has contributed to the Tony Carpio Music Workshops.
