Hong Kong composer Olivier Cong blends indie folk and experimental soundscapes. From his debut to the cinematic "Tropical Church," his music glides between hypnotic minimalism and grand, moody arrangements with a poetic, interdisciplinary touch.
Olivier Cong is a Hong Kong-based musician, composer, and guitarist whose work spans indie folk, chamber rock, and experimental soundscapes. Classically trained in piano and violin as a child, Cong began composing music while pursuing a psychology degree in Southampton, UK. His debut album, "A Ghost and His Paintings" (2018), produced by Adrian Chow, established his reputation as a songwriter and composer to watch, featuring his work on guitar, bass, accordion, and synthesizers. His music is often described as mysterious, intricate, and moody, moving from tender folk to grand post-rock arrangements. In 2024, he released "Tropical Church," an experimental ode to Hong Kong inspired by the films of Apichatpong Weerasethakul and the influence of the late Ryuichi Sakamoto. Cong’s sprawling practice includes interdisciplinary collaborations with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chung Ying Theatre Company, and writer Hon Lai-chu. Known for a sound that glides from hypnotic minimalism to maximalist detail, he continues to explore the intersections of music and visual art.
