Malaysian-Canadian neo-soul artist Eunice Keitan blends her diverse heritage with contemporary R&B. Integrating traditional Asian instrumentation like the Guzheng and bansuri, she creates evocative, layered narratives exploring identity, belonging, and social justice.
Eunice Keitan is a Malaysian-Canadian neo-soul artist and guitarist who blends a diverse cultural heritage into her music. Drawing inspiration from her Malaysian, Chinese, Canadian, and Colombian roots, she creates a rich sound that merges soul with traditional Asian soundscapes. Known as a "Third Culture Kid," her work explores complex feelings of identity and belonging, fusing the smoothness of neo-soul with evocative ancestral elements. Her discography includes the EP Smoke And Mirrors (2022), and singles such as "Lay Your Weapons Down," "No More Secrets," "Cobalt Sea," "Shine," and "Ninani." Her music often carries social weight; "Lay Your Weapons Down" addresses the struggles of refugees and the political agendas of war, while "No More Secrets" incorporates a Guzheng (Zither) melody from the Chinese Song Dynasty to explore Asian identity and healing. Her boundary-pushing sound has earned support from the Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, and Small World Music, and has been recognized by international outlets including BBC Radio, CBC Music, and Stereofox. Whether performing as a live-looping innovator or leading an ensemble, Keitan builds lush, layered narratives that bridge the gap between contemporary R&B and traditional instrumentation like the bansuri flute, gamelan-inspired vocal arrangements, and the kulintang.
