Grammy-winning bassist and composer Bam Rodriguez blends Venezuelan roots with global jazz. Based in NYC, he has collaborated with legends like Chucho Valdés and serves as a dedicated educator and resident artist at the National Jazz Museum.
Bam Rodriguez is a Grammy Award-winning bassist, synthesist, composer, and educator originally from Caracas, Venezuela. Born in 1987, his musical journey began at the age of four, leading him to start playing the electric bass at age seven. He received formal training at the prestigious Conservatorio Simón Bolívar and "El Sistema," where he shaped his love for music and sharing it with others, performing under the baton of conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel and Simon Rattle. He also remained connected to his roots in rock, salsa, and Afro-Cuban music throughout his early career. Rodriguez pursued extensive higher education in Europe, earning a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Jazz Double Bass from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, followed by a Master's degree in Jazz, Latin American, and West African rhythms from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Since moving to New York City in 2012, he has become an active piece of the global musical community, recording, touring, and performing in over 30 countries. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with legendary artists including Chucho Valdés, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo O'Farrill, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, Deepak Chopra, Claudia Acuña, and Ari Hoenig. In addition to his performance career, Rodriguez is a dedicated educator and multi-instrumentalist. He serves as a head teacher for the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, where he mentors young musicians and leads international tours. He has also taught at institutions such as NYU Abu Dhabi and UCLA. A resident artist at The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, he is committed to preserving and promoting jazz culture. Beyond music, he is an origami artist and enjoys chess, climbing, and learning new languages.
