Japanese jazz pianist Yuki Muto blends classical roots with a dynamic big band background. Known for his colorful phrasing and intellectual ballads, his 2018 debut showcases a versatile style ranging from passionate rhythms to pop-infused sensibilities.
Muto Yuki is a Japanese jazz pianist who began his musical journey at the age of five. Despite his academic background in the Faculty of Law at Chuo University, his passion for music led him to join the university's "Swing Crystal Orchestra" big band, which served as his gateway into the world of jazz. During his middle and high school years, he also played the oboe in wind ensembles, a skill he maintains alongside his primary focus on the piano. After graduation, Muto honed his craft through midnight sessions at renowned Tokyo jazz venues such as Kichijoji's "MEG," Takadanobaba's "Cotton Club" and "Intro," Shinjuku "J," and Ginza "Venus." In June 2018, he released his debut album, "I Loves You, Porgy," on the doLuck Jazz label. Performing in a trio format with bassist Shinobu Sato and drummer Kisho Kamakura, Muto's playing is characterized by a diverse palette of musical colors—ranging from passionate rhythms and high-speed phrasing to intellectual ballads and a distinctive pop sensibility in his original compositions.
