Hideo Oyama is a distinguished Japanese jazz saxophonist born in 1956 in Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture. A master of his craft, he blends a rigorous Japanese artisan spirit with a deep lineage of New York jazz, having spent significant time studying in NYC. Upon returning to Japan, he served as the lead saxophonist for the legendary big band Sharp and Flat. Oyama is a prominent figure in the Japanese jazz community, serving as a columnist for the authoritative magazine "The Sax" and authoring instructional books that are considered essential for young improvisers. In 2010, he received the prestigious honor of being invited by the Emperor of Japan to perform jazz at the Imperial Palace, solidifying his status as a national treasure. His performances often feature a blend of classic Manhattan vibes and modern Tokyo energy, collaborating with international talents such as bassist Lin Wei-sheng, pianist Yuki Muto, and drummer Yota Tsukada.
