Berklee-educated drummer and music director Nate Wong is a versatile force in Hong Kong’s scene. Founding member of Nowhere Boys, he has collaborated with pop icons and jazz legends alike, performing at major international festivals worldwide.
Nate Wong is a versatile drummer, percussionist, performer, music director, songwriter, and educator. Born to Hong Konger parents in the UK and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Nate graduated from the Berklee College of Music and has been based in Hong Kong since 2014, while frequently splitting his time with New York City and touring internationally. As a prolific sideman, Nate has performed with pop icons such as Sammi Cheng, Hacken Lee, AGA, Jay Fung, Anson Kong, and Jill Vidal, and has collaborated with jazz luminaries including Ted Lo, Eugene Pao, Greg Osby, and Antonio Hart. He has also backed international touring artists such as Reuben James, Poppy Ajudah, Benedict Cork, and Dylan Chambers. Nate is a founding member of the award-winning band Nowhere Boys and leads his own original projects, including the renegade jazz band Wong Way Down and the funk outfit Good Funk Shui. His international performance credits include appearances at Wembley Arena, Graceland Theater, Tokyo Jazz Festival, Hong Kong Jazz Festival, Euro Jazz Festival, Guangzhou Opera House, and Margaret Court Arena. As a bandleader and director, he has directed major arena concerts and theatrical productions for the Hong Kong Arts Festival, West Kowloon, and the Xiqu Centre. Nate currently serves as an adjunct professor in the Music Program at Hong Kong Baptist University and previously headed the Percussion Department at Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador.
